Being the small outfit that we are we didn’t have a good backup plan (by backup play we mean alternate plans set in place in case of emergencies) in place before having to resort to a complete erase of our hard drive and reinstallation of OS X and all our apps. ...The moral of our sad little story is that you shouldn’t count on Time Machine to completely restore after an erase of your hard drive and reinstallation of OS X. Apple and iTunes are doing very well all by themselves selling music outright and becoming the number one retail music seller in the U.S. so there doesn't seem to be any compelling reason to roll out a subscription service. Other subscription services don't seem to be doing all that great and are dwarfed by Apple's share of the retail music business, so it just doesn't make sense. This last spring, however, there were rumors flying around that Apple would offer iTunes Unlimited: a subscription service whereby the entire iTunes library would be available as an add-on to the purchase of an iPod or iPhone and subscribers could download and keep the music as long as they owned the device.

Netflix notes that this is a beta player and if you opt in, you may experience problems watching movies on your computer. They also point out that some movies aren't available to watch instantly (we're willing to bet most aren't available) and that if you join the beta program you will no longer be able to watch instantly using Windows Media Player. A report last week brought to AppleInsider's attention by French technology site ElectronLibre asserts that it's now "clear" Apple will spark new interest in its music store by removing DRM from tracks published by Sony, Universal and Warner on December 9th.  The site doesn't point to specific sources but is careful to note that Apple is moving cautiously on the matter following difficult negotiations that allegedly had the labels hoping to negotiate what EMI had done for the launch of iTunes Plus in 2007, when it successfully negotiated prices higher before ultimately agreeing to reduce the price to Apple's standard 99 cents. ...Success stories like Apple's iTunes Music store show that when given the opportunity, most people are very willing to buy music legally and won't share/pirate digital content as the RIAA and the music industry would have us think.

My iPhone 3G Woes Part 1

Since upgrading to iPhone Firmware 2.0 (including 2.0.1) I've been unable to use Wi Fi to connect with my iMac. The real kicker is that this issue only happens with certain iPhone apps: iTunes Store, YouTube, App Store. I can use Wi Fi to transfer files to my iPhone using File Magnet and I can also sync shopping lists between SplashShopper and SplashShopper desktop.

It looks to squash more than a few bugs and weighs in at a hefty 330 Mb's. ...I can't say that I suffer from any of the bugs mentioned in the article, so although I'm always ready to jump on just about any Apple update, this ones a ho-hummer for me. ;-) No doubt those afflicted will welcome the update and you can be assured that as soon as its available I'll be installing it and reporting back here.
