DLO Auto Charger for iPhone

Being the plan ahead type, during the driving portion of our recent cross-country family vacation I decided that my swanky new 3G iPhone probably wouldn’t stay charged the 16 hours it would take to reached our destination. So, the first Best Buy we came across we stopped, I ran in, cased the available iphone auto chargers and finally decided on the DLO Auto Charger for iPhone. There wasn’t actually all that many to choose from but that’s neither here nor there. The auto charger cost $24.95 and one swipe of my Visa debit card later and I was out the door and headed to Idaho ready to charge my iPhone on the go.

The charger is a simple one piece affair with a coiled cord connecting the cigarette lighter plug end to the iPhone compatible end. DLO advertises the charger as “Smart”. It has a user replaceable fuse that will protect the phone from surges that come from your cars electrical system. The lighter plug end has a built in LED that shows red when the charger is “engaged” and ready to charge (that means it’s plugged in and is receiving power from the vehicle). It shows yellow when it’s charging and green when your phone is charged. In my use I never did get a green light but that might just be because I never left my phone plugged in long enough to fully charge.

Auto chargers are pretty basic so there’s not a whole lot I can review here other than to say that it did the job. I do wish the coiled cord wasn’t so tightly coiled as once I attached the phone I pretty much had to position the phone right next to the cigarette lighter otherwise the cord would pull out of either the phone or the lighter socket. It’s very tightly coiled and not very long. One other grip is that the two piece plastic covering on the iPhone end of the cord came apart. It snapped right back together but kept falling apart during our trip. A little glue and all is well now.

As far as auto chargers go, it certainly seems perfectly adequate and one of these days I’m going to actually get a green light. One of these days......
